Melanie's Playlist Playground: Boogie Zone Mindset

A dear pal of mine got me to volunteer on the Signage crew in 2009 and I have been hooked ever since. Community? Festival? Concerts? Winterruption? Gimme more as Britney Spears would say. Currently, I am on maternity leave but usually I am lucky enough to call myself the communications and volunteer manager.

Jams on top of jams. The Boogie Zone isn’t a place, baby, it’s a mindset! Let these songs take you there.

God Has Nothing to Do With This So Leave Him Out of It“ by backxwash
Reason: Thank you Polaris Prize shortlist for backxwash. This song is incredible and took me at least 20 listens until I could guess who the sample was. This album is worth a full listen. Multiple times.

“The Guillotine” by The Coup
Reason: These cool and unique beats paired with Boots Riley’s lead vocals? *chef’s kiss*

“On the Floor” by Perfume Genius
Reason: Lyrics always hit like a mean left hook with this guy.  A song that is delicate and devastating and still at the same time makes you want to groove.

“ringtone” by 100 gecs
Reason: This song is fun. This band is fun. 10/10 would put them on every playlist.

“JU$T” by Run the Jewels ft. Pharrell
Reason: If you are unfamiliar with this duo consisting of Killer Mike and El-P then you are in for a real treat. Like many others, I’m grateful this one-off collaboration between pals has continued to turn out some really hard hitting, super relevant and thoughtful music.

“Goodbye Queen” by Jaime Wyatt
Reason: I saw this song described as “whiskey-soaked honky tonk” and I can’t get that phrase - or this song - out of my head. I wouldn’t usually say I am a country music fan but with artists like Wyatt, Lil Nas, Orville Peck and Kacy Musgraves on heavy rotation I think I can now claim that title.
